This section of the Baltic Questionnaire only refers to geared vessels and includes useful information related with their cranes.
The information in regards with the manufacturer and the type of the crane are included in the manufacturer’s manual. However, since this may not be readily available, this information may be provided by the Master.
The number of cranes and their position on the ship can be found in the General Arrangement plan and the Cargo Gear Certificate.
Outreach measures the maximum distance that the crane can reach beyond ship’s rails, both in zero lift and in maximum lift conditions. This is very important information in order for the charterers/shippers/receivers to organize the loading and discharge operations and place the cargo at the proper position of the port so as to avoid delays. It is also important in ports that a specific minimum or maximum outreach is required.
This information can be found in the Manufacturer’s manual or provided by the Master.
10.4. IF GANTRY CRANES/HORIZONTAL SLEWING CRANES STATE MINIMUM CLEARANCE DISTANCE CRANE HOOK TO TOP OF HATCH COAMING (METRES):
This paragraph applies only to very specialized vessels which are equipped with gantry cranes. Minimum clearance is the minimum distance between the crane hook and the top of hatch coaming. A sufficient minimum clearance should exist in order to avoid any damage.
In case the crane is of such type, this information will be found in the manual of the deck cranes.
Full cycle is the time required for the crane to perform a full operation from spotting the cargo, lifting, moving to the required position and returning back. This information can also be found in the manufacturer’s manual.
Combinable are ship’s cranes which can be employed together so as to make use of their combined lifting capacity when handling lifts in excess of their maximum lifting capabilities.
The manufacturer’s manual may include this information, otherwise you will need to seek assistance / advice from the vessel’s Master.
A hydraulic system that is powered or controlled electrically. Modern cargo gear winches are usually electro-hydraulic but you can find this information either in the cargo gear manufacturer manual or alternatively ask the Master.
Grabs are the clamshells used to load and/or discharge a vessel. Not all vessels have grabs onboard even if they are geared. If not onboard, the charterers/shippers/receivers hire shore grabs which fit with the vessel’s cranes. If there are grabs onboard, the vessel may get a premium on freight/hire and for this reason such information is also included in the t/c description.
If not in the T/C description, please check this information with the Master.
In order to be able to perform work at night, the vessels should have lights onboard in order to be placed into the hatches during night. It is usual the vessels to have sufficient lights but for the sake of good order, it is recommended to check with the vessel’s Master.
Logs fitted is a vessel additionally strengthened to load logs on the deck and in holds while it has special equipment for handling such cargoes. This equipment includes fixed or portable stanchions to secure logs, as well as lashing materials that include turnbuckles, wire ropes, chain, etc, fitted with a quick release mechanism to release the deck cargo in case of emergency.
The ship’s lashing plan should be adhered to as prescribed in the approved cargo loading manual.
